The world feels alive, connected with intelligence, with a lot of suprise gameplay elements and impeccable pacing and rythm. Travelling Max's Mind was a real pleasure. Every region has its own theme and enemies, and a specific soundtrack. Every region, enemy, boss, abilities, upgrades, the whole MV package is heavily tied around Max's state of mind, to provide an immersive experience for the player thanks to the on-point writing. That's for the basic Plot.Īnd the whole game design is serving this plot with great, great intelligence. Guided by your partner, Lady Depression, who basically own the place (Yeah, Max has it rough.), you're traveling inside Max's Mind, trying to suppress every happy memory he has and battling against Rival Phobias to become the very best and help Lady Depression take over Max's thoughts for good. You're inside a teenager's head, impersonating a Phobia (Coultrophobia exactly, the Fear of Clowns, hence why you're a Clowny little girl with a mallet for weapon). The entire game is built around a simple but, to my opinion, genius idea.
